What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is not simply a lack of tears. It is often related to tear quality, gland function, and how well the tear film supports the surface of your eye.

You may experience a range of minor to severe symptoms, such as:

  • Blurred or fluctuating vision
  • Burning or scratchy sensations
  • Redness or irritation
  • Watery eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • A gritty or foreign body sensation

Because dry eye can have multiple causes, effective treatment starts with understanding what is actually driving your symptoms.

Our Detailed, Diagnostic Approach

Dry eye care at our clinic begins with a focused consultation, typically lasting 30 to 40 minutes, where we combine discussion, education, and testing. Using computerized, noninvasive diagnostic technology such as the Antares system, we assess:

  • Tear break-up time (including automated TBUT)
  • Tear film quality and stability
  • Meibomian gland structure through meibography
  • Tear volume and production
  • Blinking patterns and contributing factors
  • Ocular surface staining and inflammation

These measurements allow us to determine the root cause of your symptoms and create a treatment plan based on objective findings.

How We Can Help Treat Dry Eye In-Office

We believe we can do better than a one-size-fits-all solution. Many factors can contribute to your dry eye symptoms, so understanding your individual experience and eye health is crucial to providing effective care.

We get to know you and take the time to listen to your concerns, so we can tailor treatment to your needs. We prioritize quality care by investing in technology and following emerging research. From eye nutrition tips to in-office treatments, we aim to help you experience relief that makes a lasting difference in your life.

IPL therapy targets inflammation around the eyelids, which is one of the most common contributors to chronic dry eye. Using controlled pulses of light, this treatment helps reduce inflammatory activity along the eyelid margins and supports healthier function of the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of your tears.

When these glands are working properly, your tears are more stable and evaporate less quickly. This can help reduce symptoms such as burning, irritation, and fluctuating vision throughout the day.

At Calgary Trail Vision Centre, IPL is performed using the Eye-Light system, which is designed to treat both the upper and lower eyelids in a single session without the need for gel. Each session is typically quick, around 15 minutes, making it a practical option to integrate into a treatment plan.

Low-Level Light Therapy focuses on supporting tissue health and calming inflammation at a cellular level. Rather than using heat or pressure, LLLT uses gentle light energy to encourage natural healing processes in the eyelid and surrounding structures.

This type of therapy can help improve meibomian gland function over time by supporting healthier oil flow to the tear film. A balanced oil layer helps the eyes stay lubricated and comfortable throughout the day.

LLLT is often used alongside other dry eye treatments as part of a broader plan, helping to improve overall eyelid health, reduce irritation, and support longer-term symptom relief.

Radiofrequency treatment uses gentle, controlled heat applied to the eyelid area to support natural gland activity and reduce inflammatory buildup.

By warming the tissues around the meibomian glands, RF treatment helps soften blockages and improve the release of the oils needed for a healthy tear film. This can be especially helpful for patients experiencing chronic dryness, fluctuating vision, or symptoms related to long-term gland dysfunction.

Over time, improved gland performance can contribute to more consistent eye comfort and visual clarity.

Meibomian gland dysfunction is one of the most common causes of dry eye. When these glands become blocked, the tear film loses its protective oil layer, leading to faster evaporation and ongoing irritation.

Using targeted heat and expression techniques such as iLux, we gently treat the eyelid glands to help clear blockages and restore normal oil flow. This process supports healthier tear composition and improves both comfort and visual stability.

Many patients notice a reduction in dryness symptoms and less fluctuation in vision after treatment is started as part of a structured care plan.

The eyelid margins play an important role in tear quality, but they can also collect bacteria, debris, and biofilm over time, especially in patients with blepharitis. This buildup can interfere with normal gland function and contribute to ongoing irritation.

BlephEx and ZEST are in-office cleaning treatments designed to gently and effectively remove this debris from the eyelid margins. By improving eyelid hygiene at a microscopic level, these treatments help reduce inflammation, support healthier tear production, and improve overall ocular surface comfort.

They are often used as part of a broader dry eye management plan for long-term maintenance and symptom control.

At-Home and Supportive Treatments

Dry eye management often includes a combination of in-office care and consistent home support. We may recommend:

  • Medicated and lubricating eye drops such as Thealoz Duo or Labtactiv
  • Eyelid hygiene products, including BiHOCL lid spray
  • Eye masks and warm compress therapy
  • Omega-3 supplements, including high-quality PRN formulations
  • Blinking techniques and environmental adjustments

In more advanced cases, additional options such as amniotic membrane therapy may be considered.

Personalized Plans, Measurable Results

Dry eye is a complex condition, and most patients benefit from a combination of treatments rather than a single solution. We focus on:

  • Clear patient education so you understand your condition
  • Objective measurements to track progress over time
  • Treatment plans tailored to your symptoms, lifestyle, and eye health

Our goal is not just temporary relief, but long-term improvement in comfort, vision, and quality of life.

Take the First Step Towards Dry Eye Relief

Dry eye does not have to be something you simply manage day to day. With the right diagnosis, clear measurements, and a treatment plan built around how your eyes actually function, there are ways to improve comfort, stability, and visual clarity over time.

At Calgary Trail Vision Centre and Edmonton Dry Eye Clinic, we take the time to understand what is driving your symptoms and to match them with targeted treatment options and ongoing care.

If dry eye has been affecting your work, screen use, driving, or overall comfort, a focused assessment is the first step toward finding relief that lasts. Book your dry eye consultation today and start building a treatment plan tailored to your eyes.
